Chanel College 3 (Dayne 2, Fogarty) Portmarnock 0
Chanel U-14s produced a cup final performance to claim their first silver of the year at Stella Maris Friday. Playing into a stiff breeze, Chanel were indebted to their super keeper Jude McKenna for three top class saves in the first half alone. Slowly, the Chanel defence marshalled by Connolly got on top of the tall and pacy Portmarnock attack. Callum Dunne dominated the centre forward with his physical presence. Reece Moloney was very dependable at left full and Callum Tate was probably the pick of the defenders with his composure and gritty defensive work.
In these difficult 40 minutes with the game in the balance it was Lewis Moore and Scott Lynch who showed composure and bravery. They showed for the ball, took some hits and passed beautifully.
Josh Byrne was unlucky not to score after good work from Dayne Dunne. Donnelly and Molloy toiled hard on the wings and continually stretched the Portmarnock defence.
Chanel opened the scoring when Scott Lynch and Lewis Moore played in Dayne on the right of the area. He had a lot to do, two defenders to muscle off the ball before he drove a smashing shot into the top left corner from 16 yards. 1-0 the Nel!
Fogarty had come on and was causing mayhem! Within minutes a superb five man passing move ended with Foga rounding the keeper, and (after what seemed an eternity) tapping the ball home from 5 yards for a super team goal.
Chanel were rampant now. Donnelly might have scored. May, O’ Neill and Power came on for tiring Reeces and Molloy. And then Dayne buried a third following an assist from the irrepressible Foga!
Special thanks to Cody and Eli for their assistance, the entire U-19 team for their support, Von Ryan for his support and courage and Tom Croly for giving up his boots for Callum Dunne. This was a very selfless thing to do and meant a lot to the team and managers.
Team: McKenna; Tate, Connolly, Dunne, C, Moloney(Power); Molloy(O’Neill), Moore, Lynch, Donnelly(May); Dunne D, Byrne (Fogarty).
