Disappointment for u14s in Leinster Cup game
Chanel College 2 (Dunne, Cody-Murphy) Luttrellstown 4
Chanel bowed out of the Leinster cup after a titanic struggle at the Parnell’s complex (Loftus road) on Tuesday 7th January. Despite falling behind twice, Chanel twice battled back and were in the hunt for the win when two late goals decided the tie.
Luttrellstown came out of the blocks fast and, playing a high line, they penned Chanel back in their half. Chanel struggled to get their normally slick pressing and passing game going. Did we show them too much respect? Chanel lost possession and a fast break by the pacey Luttrellstown attack led to the first away goal.
Chanel showed character and battled back immediately. May was involved in a colossal battle with the nippy number 11. Power grew into the game. Cody got a grip on midfield. Lynch played a defense-splitting ball for Dunne. Dunne showed great composure to finish coolly from 18 yards. 1-1 at half time and Chanel had yet to ignite.
The second half was only 5 minutes old when Chanel, yet again, were caught dithering in possession inside their own 18 yard box. 1-2 down.
O’ Neill came on and began to pass the ball intelligently. Lewis Moore was immense in this half. He dropped into centre mid and put in a big shift. Selfless tracking and bravery in possession characterized his display.
It was big Cody who, along with Scott, dragged Chanel back into the tie again. With fifteen minutes to go, Chanel was now in a good position. Sadly Delaney-Murphy picked up a knock but still Chanel had chances to really hurt the opposition.
And then, a lapse in concentration allowed Luttrellstown in down the left. 3-2. A penalty at the death sealed the game. Chanel can have few complaints on the day. The long winter break seemed to affect the fitness and rhythm. We have to regroup and get ready for the next league game.
Well done and thanks to all for their help with the pitch, flags, match balls and to the players for their selfless efforts for the school on the park.
