Chanel U-16 hurlers had a very comprehensive victory over St Paul’s Raheny in a thrilling local derby at Parnell’s complex on Friday 20th September.
Playing with the breeze, Chanel took control of the game from an early stage with a very authoritative midfield display from O’Toole’s and Dublin development star Luke Webster. Indeed a feature of the Chanel performance was the controlled passing and off the ball running from all six forwards.
Tyler Featherstone (O’Toole’s) was another to impress and a point he scored over his shoulder moving away from the goal was one of the scores of the match.
Matthew Waters (Trinity Gaels) moved in to fullback and completely dominated the opposition attack. His calm authority permeated the entire backline. Aron Cooling was also very impressive at half back and a one hand-pass from him, led to a superb team goal. Several Parnell’s players enjoyed the occasion as they were effectively playing at home! These included Adam Lynch and David Corbett at centre half. Hon the Nelz!
The most impressive feature of the game was the discipline of the players. The referee only penalised Chanel once in the second half. This meant that the disciplined defenders like ‘Basher’ Byrne and ‘Mauler’ McElroy never gave up cheap shots at their own goal. Indeed Paul’s missed several long range shots from the wings under clean pressure.
Paddy Smith gave a man of the match performance at right half back, with Jason Campbell, David Corbett, Jack Lynch and Adam Lynch, all giving stellar performances! Campbell’s distribution was really impressive. Time and time again he opened up the game with his incisive, selfless distribution.
The few teachers who sneaked out really enjoyed the game - even the few Chanel staff who actually went to Paul’s! Hard luck lads!
Final scoreline: 10.10 to 2.12.
Chanel: J. Brennan, McElroy, Cooling, Byrne, Smyth, Corbett, Waters, Webster, Campbell, Halligan, Lynch J., McGibney, Maher, Lynch A., Fetherstone. Subs- O’ Driscoll, Coyle, Tighe.
Well done to coaches Dunphy and Quinn. This Kilkenny-Antrim coaching ticket is really working well!
