6th Year Graduation 2019

June 6, 2019

6th year Graduation 2019 took place on Tuesday 21st May, starting with a reflective prayer service led by Fr John O’Gara in St Brendan’s Church attended by the students, their families and teachers. The theme of this year’s graduation was “change” and the new possibilities that lie before these young men as they choose a new direction in life. The students participated fully in the service, presenting the symbols that had come to represent their time in Chanel. Nathan Molloy and Colm Morrissey gave entertaining speeches looking back at some of the highlights of the last six years. They spoke of the great friends they made in Chanel and the community they felt they belonged to, whilst looking forward to the future and the freedom and challenges that will bring. Liam Kelly and Cillian Russell provided the musical backdrop on guitar and vocals and accompanied the whole 6th year group as they stood on the alter and sang “Stand by me” to create a very touching ending to proceedings.

It was then over to the Chanel Sports Hall which had been transformed into a veritable Oscars theatre for the Graduation Ceremony. Susan O’Leary pulled out all the stops this year, including two life size Oscar statues that presided over events on stage.  Each form class came up to receive their graduation momentous and have their photo taken together for one last time. Mr Mowlds then proceeded to recognise the wonderful contribution that 6th years had made and award individual students for their achievements, be it from Sport to Maths to Modern Languages. This year saw the introduction of the Declan Mowlds Science award in honour of the principal’s imminent retirement and Ms Brazil paid tribute to the amazing work and huge contribution Mr Mowlds has made to Chanel over the last 14 years. A beautiful bouquet of flowers was also presented to Brenda Daly for her outstanding service to the Chanel Parents Association over the years.

All that remained was to wish the class of 2019 success and happiness in their future endeavours and to round the occasion off with a delicious buffet and refreshments for all present.
