3rd year JCSP Debate
On Wednesday, 13th March the Colin Room in Chanel College was transformed into a debating chamber. Third year JCSP students were faced with the challenge of participating in a debating competition. Students were presented with pen, paper and highlighter and told to arrange themselves into teams of three. Each team selected a team name and captain. Topics were chosen and teams were assigned either proposition or opposition. Senior students were on hand to coach and support the teams as they brainstormed ideas and prepared their speeches.
Five teams took to the floor to debate topics such as mobile phone use, shouting and uniforms. Students stood behind a lectern and spoke for 45 seconds with captains delivering closing speeches for one minute. All students rose to the challenge. Two adjudicators from transition year had some very tough decisions to make as the standard was high. Points were awarded for coherent content and persuasive delivery.
Trophies were awarded to first and second place teams, with the third place team receiving medals.
After the exertions of the morning, students welcomed a special delivery from Apache pizza to finish off a rewarding and successful debating experience.
Thanks to Ms Linnane and Mr Fahy for all their work in organising the event and all the senior students who helped out on the day.
