School Improvement Plan-Numeracy

Literacy is the ability to read and use written information and to write appropriately in a range of situations. It involves the integration of speaking, listening and critical thinking with reading and writing.

Numeracy is the capacity to use mathematics in everyday situations at home, at work and for  participation in community life. This involves applying mathematical knowledge such as when estimating, measuring and interpreting information presented in text, tables and as graphs.

​Some Facts:



• Standards of 15- year olds in reading literacy and mathematics have been declining since 2000.


• The Pisa 2009 tests showed that 17 per cent of 15 year olds in Ireland and almost one in four teenage boys lack the literacy skills to function effectively in today' s society.


• About one-fifth of Irish students in the PISA 2009 tests did not have sufficient mathematical skills to cope with every-day life and Ireland also had significantly fewer high performing students than other countries.


• Employers and third-level institutions have been consistently critical of the standards of literacy and numeracy of students leaving post-primary education.

Our Goals:

 

  • Create a reading friendly environment by opening a library in the school.


• Foster an enjoyment for reading in and outside of school.


• Bring literacy and numeracy outside of the classroom by engaging students with problem solving tasks in a fun way.


• Incorporate ICT (Information Communications Technology) into our lessons to encourage an appreciation of digital media in today's society and teach students the skills to use it safely, effectively and efficiently.


• Increase the percentage of students taking higher Level Mathematics at the end of the new Junior Cycle.


• Increase the percentage of students taking Higher Level Mathematics in Leaving Certificate.

What can you do?

• Encourage your son to read. Discuss the book. Ask them did they enjoy it? What did they enjoy?

 

• Read your son’s writing and praise when possible. If something is unclear ask them about it.



• Encourage your son to re-read their work out loud, to check for wording, spelling and punctuation.



• When reading information with diagrams, graphs tables, ask your son to explain what they represent.



• If items are on sale ask your son to calculate the reduced prices.



• Show your son short cuts to solving number problems, like rounding numbers off to make problems easier.

 

​• Use newspapers, TV and magazines to examine adverts that use statistics to calculate the use or effectiveness of products. Is it a fair representation?
