Debating builds self-confidence, improves oratory skills and promotes critical thinking. It develops skills of persuasive argument in a competitive and enjoyable atmosphere.
Chanel College has competed in national debating competitions, including the UCD Junior School’s Debate and the inter-schools Marist debate. All students involved found the experience challenging and highly rewarding, giving them a sense of personal achievement, while learning to work together as a cohesive team.
Debating promotes socialisation. Students get an opportunity to compete against other young people from different backgrounds, with varying abilities. It has proved an integral part of the extra-curricular activities offered in the school.
It is critically important to promote literacy as a practical skill, vital for communication. Debating improves literacy and promotes independent research of topics from current affairs and areas of popular interest. This will ensure Chanel College promotes and nurtures well-rounded intelligent students, confident enough to voice their opinions.
